About Dr. Murphy

Dr. Peter W. Murphy, MD, is a board-certified family physician dedicated to providing comprehensive, patient-centered healthcare. With a strong background in rural health, medical education, and clinical research, Dr. Murphy brings a wealth of experience to his practice, Mountain View Direct Care, in Fryeburg, Maine.


Education & Medical Training

Dr. Murphy earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 2014. During his time at UVA, he served as the President of the Family Medicine Interest Group and founded the Virginia Wellness Initiative, a student-led organization promoting healthcare access for underserved populations.

He completed his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Virginia Health System (2014-2017), where he trained in the rural health track at Crossroads Family Medicine, providing bilingual care to underserved Latino communities. He also worked with the International Family Medicine Clinic, offering specialized care to refugees and immigrant populations.

Dr. Murphy graduated cum laude from Amherst College in Amherst, MA, in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology, focusing on cellular and molecular biology. His honors thesis explored membrane vesicle dynamics in male pronuclear envelope formation, and he was awarded the William C. Young Prize for outstanding research in biology.

Dr. Murphy’s passion for research began early in his career, having conducted cardiology and nephrology research at institutions such as Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and the University of Chile School of Medicine, where he studied hormone-mediated arteriosclerosis in patients with end-stage renal disease.


Professional Experience

Dr. Murphy has served in primary care roles across New England, most recently at Memorial Hospital, MaineHealth, in North Conway, NH. He has served as MaineHealth Associate Medical Director for High Value Care. His clinical practice focuses on holistic primary care, wellness, and preventive medicine.

Previously, he worked with Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Brookline, MA (2017-2020), where he served as a clinical instructor for Harvard Medical School students and participated in the MA Responds COVID-19 Response Team.

Dr. Murphy’s Mountain View Direct Care practice is rooted in his belief that healthcare should be personal, accessible, and patient-focused. Through his direct primary care model, he eliminates insurance complexities, allowing more time with patients and fostering long-term, trust-based relationships. His goal is to empower patients with the knowledge, support, and care they need to lead healthier lives.

Dr. Murphy has authored multiple peer-reviewed journal articles and has presented research at international medical conferences. His work has been published in Blood Coagulation & Fibrinolysis, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and the Pan-American Journal of Trauma, Critical Care & Emergency Surgery. His research contributions include studies on hypertension treatment in pregnancy, investigations into cardiac arrhythmias, nephrology, and vascular calcification, innovations in medical education and emergency medicine training.
